I am often simultaneously amazed and confounded by existence |
and I always seem to be compelled by what is not easily perceivable in direct experience but is everywhere implied. It is as if the beauty and meaning are hidden in the relationship between the present and all that, which is refused or withheld but is intimately connected to reality at some not so obvious level. This relationship is what I explore in my art. |

I find the art process and the language of line, shape, color, |
texture and space ideal for creating an open-ended dialogue in reference to these concerns. The art process and its language are just one step less removed from direct experience than the written word for me. Visual art's slightly closer connection to the sensate world allows me to explore more fully the various aspects of an experience for which I don't necessarily have enough clear word thoughts. |

My work is largely figurative but not in the classical manner. I |
frequently incorporate fragmented figures, frenetic mark making, layer image over image, use a variety of scales, work with several medias on a single surface and sometimes introduce multiple viewpoints. These particular structural approaches are well suited for allowing me to explore the temporal versus the persistent and to explore the limiting quality of individual perceptions in any given situation. Although at times this may make the surfaces seem chaotic, my hope is that this more open-ended construction makes it possible to view the familiar anew. |
